Alisa Noble donated this handmade journal to the Hope For Oklahoma Art Auction in June.

Being the selfish hoarder of my friend's work, I had to have it.

 

She added many things to my package.

Lovely unexpected hand carved wood stamps, and pencils.

 

Butterflies always appear in Alisa's work. These are completely hand stitched.

Once I found Mary Ann Moss and her Remains of the Day Journal tutorial, I found IT. Everything I had been saving and learning came together in a sewn handmade book.

I signed up for her next online journal class, Full Tilt Boogie in November 2011.

I don't think of myself as an optimist or even a hopeful person, but I somehow believe in this future Utopia of feeling centered and having loads of time on my hands.

Since that hasn't happened I embarked In May of 2011, only a year and a half after my initial purchase, to watch the videos and make a journal.

Using the 30 minute chunks of time I pieced this together over several weeks.

And I am in love.

I utilized an old celluloid album I bought in November 2012 at the Rose Bowl Flea.

I employed the sewing collage page technique from Remains of the Day.

I made my pages the same size, mostly.

And it is fabulous.

Look!

I made it!

I love it!

 

Remember that childlike enthusiasm for things you made? I have that now!

And I will not apologize for tons of photos of my baby!

an auction

to raise money for Oklahoma tornado survivors will be hosted on Facebook. 

Heather Ales has taken on this task and has over 50 artists contributing handmade art pieces. All bidding will be on Facebook comments. Items will appear Monday.

 

It is will easy. Art will be plentiful. The need is great.

Here is a photo of my own young cousin's home and car devestated on Monday 20 February.

Hope For Oklahoma

I always donate a doll or three to the school auction. A few years ago the theme was The Wizard of Oz. I made up three items for that and thought I'd show you.

The whole lynch pin for Dorothy's problem with the witch is the unseen dead sister. This is all we glimpse of her. I thought I would honor her.

Of course we love Dorothy and the Wicked Witch because they represent the classic struggle between good and evil, virgin and naughty girl.

The three dolls brought in some good money for the school so I was thrilled. I then sold all the witches I had made. Since fall is upon us, well, it will be, thought I would make some more.

Dang this is the part where I rethink how much I charge for these witches. Each doll takes about 6 to 8 hours to create. I feel the textile arts are so under-valued. I have to keep reminding myself at times why I enjoy this. Then the faces start to come to life and I love them all over again!
